Canvas Access Has Been Restored - Message to Students

Friday, 5/8/26 at 6:00 p.m.
From: Dr. Jennifer Flatt, Provost/Executive Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs

Canvas access has now been restored for ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ students and instructors. We have no reason to believe data has been mishandled beyond that which was already reported. Full integration of Starfish will not be available until Monday. Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

Please keep these key points in mind as you log back in:

  • Check your course for updates in the next few days. Your instructors will be sharing adjusted deadlines and instructions as needed.
  • Prioritize your coursework and communicate with your instructor as needed. Your grade will not be negatively affected by coursework due to the disruption. Your instructor is committed to helping you stay on track.
  • Do not click on any unusual links or perform unexpected tasks. Contact the ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ Student Help Desk with any concerns.

¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ continues to actively monitor this situation closely. The security of our students, employees, and systems is always a top priority.

Continue to remember these general safety practices:

  • Be alert for suspicious emails, messages, or links. Cybercriminals can use information about you to create convincing phishing attempts that appear to come from trusted sources.
  • ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ and Canvas will never ask for your password, multi-factor authentication (MFA) codes, or to approve a login via email, Teams message, text message, or phone call.
  • ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ staff will never ask students for remote access to a personal device.
  • Avoid clicking links or downloading attachments from unfamiliar messages.
  • Use strong, unique passwords and update passwords regularly. Avoid reusing them across platforms.

Update on Canvas Access and Support - Message to Students

Friday, 5/8/26 at 1:00 p.m.
From: Dr. Jennifer Flatt, Provost/Executive Vice President of Academic & Student Affairs

We want to share a brief update as we continue to monitor the nationwide data security incident affecting Instructure, the provider of Canvas. ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ will reopen Canvas when we are confident it is secure to do so.

We know this disruption comes at a stressful point in the semester. Please keep these key points in mind:

  • Don’t panic about class deadlines. This disruption is happening to all of us, and we will work through it together.
  • Your grades will not be unfairly impacted. If you missed something because of this disruption, we will work it out.
  • Stay connected through your ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ email. It is the best way to receive updates and communicate with your instructors right now. You can access your instructor’s contact information in your Starfish Student Success Network.
  • Don’t log into Canvas until notification from ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ to do so.

Our instructors are skilled at adapting and adjusting to unknown circumstances, and we are providing them with support and clarity around what to do in the current situation as it evolves. Everyone at ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ is committed to and focused on student learning. As we evaluate the current situation and its timing, we are focusing on ensuring students will learn what they need to be successful in their next courses and their careers.

Thank you for your patience and flexibility as we work through this situation. We will share additional updates as soon as they are available.

Update on Canvas Outage

Thursday, 5/7/26 at 4:00 p.m.

This afternoon, ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ became part of a nationwide Canvas outage. We are aware of the outage and multiple teams are working to address this issue on behalf of our students.

Please note: if Canvas prompts you to perform any action – such as clicking a link, logging in, resetting your password, or completing any tasks – do not proceed. These prompts may not be legitimate while the system is down. We will send a follow-up notification when Canvas is back online.

The original third-party cybersecurity incident, first reported May 1, affects the cloud-based system operated by Instructure, and affects colleges and universities throughout Wisconsin and the United States.

As we know more, we will share it promptly. Thank you for your patience.
