STATUS: RESOLVED for moodle.colgate.edu
Moodle (moodle.colgate.edu) is back online and available for normal use. OpenLMS has installed the PHP security patches on ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ’s site, and it is now protected against the vulnerabilities that prompted the outage.
If Moodle doesn’t load for you right away, try refreshing the page or clearing your browser cache. If that doesn’t help, contact the ITS service desk at itshelp@colgate.edu, or call us at 315-228-7111.
Other campus services may still see brief interruptions as their providers finish applying patches. We will continue to post updates on this page.

¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ's Moodle site (moodle.colgate.edu) is temporarily unavailable – and more sites may go down with little notice so that security patches can be applied. In the case of Moodle, our hosting provider, OpenLMS, took Moodle offline as a precaution after a security vulnerability in PHP, the software Moodle runs on, was found to be actively exploited by attackers worldwide.
There is no evidence at this time that ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ's Moodle data has been accessed or compromised. Taking the site offline is a preventive step to keep it that way while a fix is applied.
What’s happening
A security flaw was recently discovered in PHP, a programming language used by many websites and web applications, including Moodle. Attackers are actively attempting to exploit this flaw on systems around the world. [ ]
To protect ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ and the other institutions it hosts, OpenLMS proactively took affected Moodle sites offline until the vulnerability can be patched and the systems verified as secure. Other sites may need to be taken down, often with little notice due to security concerns.
What you'll see
In the case of Moodle, if you visit moodle.colgate.edu, you will be redirected to a status page from OpenLMS that explains the issue and the steps being taken. This is expected. Please don't try to reach Moodle through other links or bookmarks in the meantime.
If other sites are taken down, you may see different messages on your browser.
Be cautious of any emails, texts, or pop-ups claiming to restore access or asking for your ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ password. ITS will never ask for your password. If something looks suspicious, contact the ITS Service Desk.
What this means for classes
While Moodle is offline, you won't be able to view course materials, submit assignments, take quizzes, or check grades in Moodle. Students, please check with your instructors for information related to due dates or material availability during the outage.
When will these sites be back?
OpenLMS is working to apply the security fix and restore service as quickly as it can be done safely. We don't yet have a confirmed restoration time. We will update this post and notify campus by email as soon as Moodle is available again.
Need help?
If you have questions or need assistance, contact the ITS Service Desk.
Thank you for your patience while we keep ¸Ô±¾ÊÓƵ's systems and data secure.
